Sri Lanka’s Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) offers temporary driving licenses for foreigners right at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) arrival terminal. Here’s a complete guide on how to obtain one hassle-free.
✅ What You Need to Get Started
To apply for a temporary driving license at the airport counter, make sure you have the following:
A Valid Foreign Driving License
Only full driving licenses are accepted for conversion.
Provisional, learner, probationary, or temporary licenses are not accepted.
Translation (if applicable)
If your license is not in English, you must provide a certified English translation, ideally from your embassy.
Passport and Visa
A valid passport with a visa or entry permit is mandatory.

Important Guidelines
Your foreign license must be valid for at least one year from the date of conversion.
The temporary license is applicable only for motorcycles and light vehicles.
